This Reminds Me....

...of why I don't miss living in Seattle. I've been in Seattle since Thursday evening to visit friends and spend time with my dad for Father's Day. Pretty much the whole time I've been here, the skies have looked like this and the temperature has been a balmy mid-50's to low-60's. The fog and grayness outside have seeped inside my body to create a haziness in my brain and in my limbs, and I've fought off chills from my body's attempt to acclimate itself from the 100 degree heat of San Jose. Funnily enough, when you live in this climate for a few years, you almost fool yourself into thinking that it's not that bad - that it's normal for you to move in slow motion and have constantly bad hair. Tonight, I return to what I once hated, but now have come to call my home - the almost consistenly sunny, congested, and plastic Silicon Valley.

I still miss living in the Seattle area, and I haven't lived there for 15 years now. The thing that I loved was how no one ever took sunshine for granted. And the rain wasn't usually rain--just a mist or a light sprinkling. No one in my family thought to carry umbrellas for the most part. It's not for everybody, but I'd like to live in the NW again.

Kitkat - I still miss it because my dad lives here and so do my two best friends. It's just that I'm pretty certain that I'm very much negatively affected by gloomy weather. I was never diagnosed with SAD, but I would not be suprised if I had it. I feel physically very different now - other than the first part of my pregnancy, I feel like I have more energy and don't get into "funks" as often. California has its issues, believe me. There are still things that drive me crazy. But being here for a few days makes me appreciate the San Jose weather.

As long as I have Mike Birbiglia to listen to, Seattle's no problem.

I don't think I could handle either of those climates. ;)

OOG. I need sunshine. I would whither and die in Seattle.

At least you get to visit friends & family and go back to sunny home...

That is true. I like visiting but I dont think I could ever get myself to move back home to MN. The weather gets hot and humid here in WI but I have come to like it better than that dry heat they get up there. I love visiting but I enjoy coming home even more.

Dad - Well, I have to admit that he was pretty entertaining. :-P

TSHS - You're lucky because you have seasons. That's one thing I miss about Spokane. We definitely had four seasons.

Laura - I was so happy to get home last night. Without fail, the sun came out this morning and promises to warm me up.

Tweety - I visited Wisconsin briefly in the summer a few years ago. I liked all the trees and the weather was pretty good. I'd think the winters would be cold, though.

Looks like it would dampen the spirits.

There not that bad really but that is my opinion from living in MN all my life where we had dry winters. I like the moist winters better.

Bearette - It dampens my spirit, but other people love it. Go figure. :-P

SME - Well, to be fair, summers are usually nice there. But in the winter, it's pretty much just rain.

Tweety - Everyone has their "perfect" climate, I guess.

Hey, I don't miss Seattle either. And that was just one of the many reasons. The traffic, the depressed people, the lack of nightlife downtown.

It did have its beauty though.

ZS - I saw a lot of flowers and greenery, which I really missed when I came to San Jose. I couldn't believe how "brown" things were and it took quite a while to get used to that, too. I never partook in the nightlife, so I don't know about that vs. here.

I've always wanted to visit/live in Seattle. I know the weather is generally gloomy, but isn't the culture supposed to be amazing? Congrats on your pregnancy, by the way!

Not that crazy - Thanks for visiting. I stumbled across your blog when I was blog surfing. I love the baby picture you have for the profile.

As far as culture, yes, Seattle has that, but as far as I can tell, no more so than any other decent sized city. If you haven't been to Seattle, though, it is a fun place to visit, especially if you're into outdoor activities.
